One element we frequently see is a TV above the fireplace. It looks simple on the plans. In practice, it’s one of the most crowded spots in the house to coordinate.
Why this wall gets crowded
The fireplace is the first thing you see when you walk in. It holds the TV and hides the power and cabling that feed it. With a gas fireplace, it also holds the gas valve.
Each of those belongs to a different trade, and each is easy to plan on its own. The trouble shows up where they meet, which is usually right behind the TV.
The gas valve problem
We typically integrate the fireplace controls into the home’s lighting control system, so the fireplace runs from the same controls as the lights. That integration requires a much larger gas valve box and easy access for service. That usually means an exposed 12” access panel somewhere near the fireplace.
How we solved it
We don’t want to see the gas valve, so we modify the back of the TV box and recess the gas valve box inside it.
That keeps the valve concealed while allowing the TV to sit completely flush against the wall. The controls keep working, the valve keeps its access, and nobody in the room sees any of it.
The detail itself is small. What makes it work is timing. The TV box, the valve, and the controls have to be worked out before the wall is closed, with the electrician, the fireplace installer, the AV team, and the builder all working from the same plan.
Why brand-neutral design matters here
Every trade on this wall has a piece of the answer. The fireplace supplier knows the fireplace. The AV installer knows the TV mount. We know the control system. Each of them is solving for their own part.
As the “electrical and lighting architect,” we look at the whole wall, what the room needs, what each trade needs, and where they’re going to run into each other.
Bring us in early
The finished wall depends on decisions made long before the TV goes up. If you’re a builder, architect, or interior designer working on a home in River Oaks, Memorial, Tanglewood, or anywhere in Texas, bring us in early. A TV above a fireplace, a media wall, or a room where the controls need to disappear: we’ll coordinate it before it’s built.
